Pune marathon '13

1 dec 2013

I was supposed to be running today. But I am sitting at my home in Mumbai hoping the ankle will recover soon. I was supposed to be enjoying pains after running 21 kms in Pune half marathon. But i am bearing ankle pain.

Exactly 2 weeks back, I ran 25 kms. I was very happy because I thought I could run 30 kms the next week. Puru, Srigith, Jayesh and me decided to run more than 15 m that day. I was determined to run 25 kms. We were traing for Pune marathon. I was doing quite well for 2 weeks. After 2 kms, Puru dropped out as his ankle started complaining and he did not want to take risk. After all Pune marathon was just 2 weeks away. Jayesh is a new runner so he would run some 4/5 kms. Srigith and I ran together for 6 kms as he took u turn at Patni and I continued further because I wanted to make 25 kms without going for 3rd loop. Running on same road for more than once in a day bores me.

I met Srigith again at 15th Km. He ran more than 15 kms that day. I had some pain in one of my left foot fingers. That was surfacing intermittently. Just to avoid that pain, I was putting pressure on other side. I am paying for this mistake. I finished 25 kms that day without any difficulty but I hurt my ankle badly.

Today I don't know how long it will take to heal. Walking has become a task for me.Mumbai marathon is just 50 days away. I should have been clocking 80/90 kms every week now. But walking for one km is beyond my imagination. I should be up and running at least in next week. If not, I have to give up on Mumbai marathon. It is my first full marathon if at all I run. God please do something....

I had decided to run as many half marathons as possible this year. I wanted to run Satara half marathon which is a very difficult one. I could not participate in it, as it's date collide with Ganpati festival. However I could run Vasai Virar marathon on 27th October. I was participating in half marathon. This is one of the best marathon I have seen as far as organization is concerned. People flocked out to encourage runners. Water was made available every 500 meters. School students boosted runners with drums and shouting. It was a fantastic experience. However I don't consider it as my good performance. I started the running with objective of finishing it in 2 hours. I started well finishing first 2 kms in 5 mins each. I maintained a good pace for another 3/4 kms. I was running fast on the beat of music. Encouraging song of 'Bhag Milkha Bhag' had added wings. But soon I realized that it was going to be difficult. I dropped my pace but by then I had lost most of my energy. I have come to a position where running half marathon is not a difficult task for me. But the race started at 7:00 am and Sun god had started penalizing. After 12 kms I had started feeling it very difficult but I still continued. I somehow finished 15 kms and decided to walk for a kilometer. However I was completely drained out by then. I walked for most of the distance in last 6 kms and finally finished the race in 2 hours 50 mins. This was a poor performance considering my last two performances in Goa(2:18) and Thane (2:14). Most of of runners registered their worse performances that day due to high humidity. Jayesh finished his first half marathon. He was ecstatic.

I must thank Vijay, my team member, for collecting our BIBs. After the marathon, we went to Vijay's place. His home is one of the best homes I have seen. We enjoyed Promfet and chicken there. It was best promfet dish I have ever had.

Even though I can blame humidity but I knew my training was not enough. I decided  not to repeat the mistake in Pune marathon. I trained hard before hurting my ankle. I ran 21 kms twice (2:16 and 2:14). I was pretty much prepared for Pune marathon but you need to expect such setbacks too.
